Our take on Shopify

Shopify is the platform we'd point most first-time store owners to, and the reason is boring in the best way: the storefront, checkout, payments, shipping and taxes are one system that simply works, and the app store fills any gap. The AI additions — Shopify Magic for product descriptions and Sidekick for setup and analytics questions — are useful, but you'd choose Shopify for the platform, not the AI.

The honest cost picture: the $1/month introductory months make the first quarter almost free, and then Basic is $39 a month plus payment-processing fees. Yearly billing is the only lasting discount, and it's substantial — about 25% on every plan. There is no code that changes that, whatever coupon sites claim.

Pros & cons

What works
  • Everything a store needs in one system — checkout, payments, shipping, taxes, POS
  • Introductory offer: 3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months
  • Yearly billing cuts every plan by roughly 25%
  • Largest app and theme ecosystem of any store builder
What to know
  • Transaction fees on top of plan price unless you use Shopify Payments
  • Apps add up fast — many stores end up paying more for apps than for the plan
  • No public promo codes and no student rate — don't waste time hunting one

Who Shopify is for

Anyone launching a real online store who wants the platform to disappear into the background. If you're building a landing page or a one-product site, a lighter builder is cheaper; if you're selling seriously, Shopify is the default for a reason.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Shopify discount code?

No. Shopify does not issue public promo codes, and the codes listed on coupon aggregators do not work at signup. Shopify's real discount is the introductory offer for new stores — 3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months — plus about 25% off when you choose yearly billing.

How much does Shopify cost after the $1 months?

Basic $39/month, Grow $105/month, Advanced $399/month when billed monthly — or $29, $79 and $299 respectively when billed yearly. Plus starts at $2,300/month.

Does Shopify have a student or non-profit discount?

Not as a published rate on the pricing page. The introductory $1/month offer and yearly billing are the discounts available to everyone.

Which Shopify plan should a first store pick?

Basic. It covers a full storefront, checkout and payments; Grow and Advanced mainly lower transaction fees and add staff accounts and reporting, which matters once you have real volume.
